Toya Delazy, multi-award winning South African artist, has released dates for her Rocking the City Africa tour which will see her tour 7 different African countries over 7 weeks and Windhoek’s turn is on Saturday 22 October at the Warehouse Theatre.
Known as a front runner and visionary within the music industry, Toya Delazy’s new endeavor is just another indicator of how Toya is running her own race and carrying the SA flag high. Hot off the heels of touring Europe over the past few months, Toya Delazy is on tour through Africa with her dynamic jazz-electro-hip-pop music, or JEHP as she’s dubbed it.
Toya was discovered by Sony Music Africa in 2011 and went on to perform at the 2011 Africa Concert in Johannesburg. Her first single “Pump It On” dominated the Top 40 charts across SA for 16 weeks, with the iconic video gaining viral status across Pan-African channels, including MTV Base, Trace, Channel O, OkayAfrica and Vuzu, and prompted Reebok to recruit her as brand ambassador in 2012. Shortly after, Legit provided the means for her to produce her own clothing line.
Toya’s singles “Heart”, “Love Is In The Air” and “Are You Gonna Stay” Due Drop reached Gold Status, featuring her on shows such as Top Billing, X-Factor, Expresso and Idols and bagged various awards including Newcomer of The Year, Best Pop Album and Best Production for Due Drop Deluxe at the 2013 SA Music Awards as well as the BET Award Nomination for Best International Act: Africa. This all between 200 tour dates across Southern Africa between 2012 - 2014.
In 2015, Toya released her 2nd album, titled “Ascension”, with hit singles “Forbidden Fruit" and “My City”.
The album propelled Toya to international levels, headlining at the Apollo Theater NYC, scooping Best International Song Award at the 2016 Out Music Awards held in New York with “Forbidden Fruit” and recently headlining a SOFAR showcase in London.
Toya moved to England and has been playing the European circuit since, recruiting world-class dancers, collaborators, producers and sound engineers on all-new tracks and with visually enticing backdrops for her shows for her upcoming third album. Her single “Nu High” has been successfully released in June 2016.
Rolling Stone Magazine says of Toya “Sassy and classy enough to compete globally” while The Times said “Toya Delazy’s sound - masterful blend of pop, soul, jazz and electro - is unique and refreshing.” Heat Magazine says “Toya Delazy is a burst of fresh air. We haven’t heard such an original album for a while. We love it” and FHM rates it as “Due Drop is superb, it’s an ass-shaker that you’re not likely to tire of.”
